Ignorance of Our Destiny

How do we sink from the abundance of what God’s calling offers to the emptiness of a mundane life?

We get there because we would rather settle for a humdrum existence than let go and embark on the adventure of faith for which God has destined us.  That’s why Jesus warned us, “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.”  (Mark 8:35)

What happens if we lose our lives?

What if we really let go?

The Bible tells us, “For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance.  But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”  (Matthew 25:29)  The Greek term for abundance (perisseuo) means “to superabound.”  In other words, God’s plan for our lives is beyond measure.  If we let go of what we can measure, we will be in a position to receive the immeasurable superabundance of all that God has.  This makes perfect sense when we consider that we are finite beings, but God is infinite.  Therefore, as we follow John the Baptist’s example and decrease so that Christ can increase, our limits give way to His infinite ability.

Remember that God is spirit, and He operates above our natural realm.  God is not just superhuman; He’s supernatural.  This means that in Christ we also will function in a realm outside of the natural.  That’s how Moses parted the Red Sea and Peter walked on water.  It’s how Paul was able to heal the sick.  And it’s how God orchestrates His dream through us.

And He called to him the crowd with His disciples and said to them, “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.  For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?  For what can a man give in return for his soul?  For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”  (Mark 8:34-38)

Lord Jesus, I lay down my life at Your feet.  Please make me Your servant, an instrument to be used by You.  Help me not to fall back on my own strengths to advance Your kingdom - let me always live for You!
