Experts tell us that people not only use language to describe the world they see, but language and the words used actually help to create the world people experience. In what way is this true? Our subconscious mind loves consistency and so will try to interpret what it experiences in a way consistent with the words we use. So with such a powerful tool on the tips of our tongues you can both shape the way others view the world by carefully choosing how and what you say. How is this done? Using language and words the right way, actually allows you to hypnotize someone you speak to. I don't mean a complete hypnotic induction like you see in the movies, where someone lies on a couch. But rather, you can speak directly to their subconscious mind when you use the right words and tone of voice. This gives you the ability to influence people to view things the way you want them to. In other words you can change the way people behave by saying the right things in the right way. What to say to do this? Influencing someone's subconscious mind is actually pretty straightforward. The world famous hypnotist, Milton Erickson, developed a conversational hypnosis model with three stages: Stage 1. Look for signs that reveal how the person views something. Notice the language used. What words does she use to describe her feelings. After you spot the pattern, use her experiences to lead her attention to her own inner experiences. You can accomplish this by asking questions such as "How was that for you?", or "How does that make you feel?" This is focusing them inward where they will understand how their world view makes them feel. Stage 2. The next stage of the Erickson Model is aimed at distracting the person's conscious mind. Milton Erickson did this by speaking with complex and ambiguous langauge. Erickson would chose words having the same sound, but with different meanings. Example words are sale-sail, wander-wonder, hear-here, right-write. He would also use double binds that left the mind only a desired set of options. For instance, he would say something like, I don't know if you will fall into a trance now, or in five minutes. The words he uses allow the subconscious only two alternatives: fall into a trance now or in a few minutes. This is also an example of an embedded command, fall asleep now or very soon. When words are incorrectly used, it confuses and distracts the conscious mind. This causes the conscious mind to look inward, asking for help from the subconscious mine. These are a few of the Milton Model methods of distracting the conscious mind. I'm not sure if you want to learn about the Milton Model now or later :-) Stage 3. Finally, once the conscious mind has been sufficiently distracted, the final stage in the Milton Model is to uses the resources of the subconscious mind. There are a few methods of doing this. The simplest is to embed commands in your sentences, so they are not apparent to the conscious brain, but will be perceived by the subconscious brain. Here are some examples: --I don't know if you will do the dishes now --You can do this, can't you? --You will do that, haven't you? (Yes, this is intentional it makes no sense to your conscious mind, but it does make sense to your subconscious) So, it sounds like all you need to do is say some confusing things to someone, with embedded commands and you can get her to do whatever you want. Well, my answer to that is maybe. The critical point about conversational hypnosis is that someone will only go along with your commands if they don't try to make her break her values and genuine beliefs. Although you can certainly speak to someone's subconscious using Milton Model techniques, it will take quite a bit more than some conversational hypnosis to change her values. Practicing the Milton Model, you can become quite good at applying conversational hypnosis to make embedded commands to covertly influence those around you.
