We all know that social sites can be found in multitudes, and that they are here to stay.  We also know that a few of the bigger sites allow members to be interactive; Mixx, StumbleUpon, Digg...  The question is:  Do we take advantage and be interactive, or do we remain in the shadows?  

The main point of social media marketing is being interactive.  Sure we all need backlinks, and we have things to do, and everything takes time, but being active is what makes social sites work.  If there were little or no interaction, these sites wouldn't be called social sites.  

There are some social sites where bookmarking is the main thing, and that's fine.  However, if you are involved in social sites like those listed above, there are some good benefits to being active.   By active I mean submitting interesting material, voting, commenting and interacting with other members.  

The first thing that you need are friends.  Friends make things work better in any social site.  The more friends you have, the more likely it is that your submissions will rank better and become noticed.  It's great to find a social site where friendship is not limited, that way you can add as many as you like and let them know about the things you submit.  

Once you have accumulated a decent amount of friends, you should make yourself known by voting on their submissions and commenting as well, if you have something to say.  Submissions rank well within the social sites when they have more votes and more comments.  Therefore, you want votes and comments on your submissions and so do your friends.  

When you are an active member in any social site, other active members will notice you and will probably reciprocate.  They will add you as a friend, and will vote and comment on your submissions.  I have found this to be true, especially in Mixx, where even the popular Mixxers will add you and vote on your stuff.  

The more active you can be, the more direct traffic you shall receive from your efforts.  Also know that the title, description and the keywords need to be done properly.  Make sure that you have good, interesting titles, informative descriptions and that you use keywords.  These will all help in getting your submissions noticed, and bringing more traffic to your site.  

The added bonus to using social sites is getting a "dofollow" backlink.  Every link you bookmark in the social sites gives you another backlink to your website.  Whether or not the backlink is a "dofollow" depends on the site, but I have researched that more here.  More backlinks are always better for your business, and social bookmarking allows the little guy to be competitive with the sites that would otherwise take over the search engines.  

Social sites have become a very important tool for small businesses and those looking to work from home and make money online.  By being active within these sites, where you are able, you will be able to brand yourself in a way.  This will be better for your online recognition, and that of your business as well.
