The phenomenon that is social media marketing is currently sweeping through the world, and many are taking advantage of its benefits.  There are a number of things that you can do with social sites; search for information that has been rated by humans, get connected with friends around the world, bookmark important or unique websites, or vote on sites that have already been submitted.  Every one of these reasons for using the social sites has the possibility to benefit your business in one way or another.  

The first thing you need to do is register at any social media site of your choice (Mixx, Twitter, Facebook, etc...).  There are literally thousands of social sites throughout the net to choose from, and you have no doubt heard of some of them by now.  You should be able to find plenty of them to use up the free time that you do have, and you can do that by simply doing a search in Google.  

After you register you will need to create your profile. Upload an image of yourself so that others know who they are interacting with.  Write a brief summary about yourself.  Then add a link to your website, if you have one.  This may, or may not be a dofollow link, but you will be able to build plenty of those later on. 

Once you have completed your profile, begin to surf around looking for people who share your ideas and interests.  Add them as a friend, leave a kind message for them, and they may also add you as a friend once they receive your message.  Friends make things happen in the social network world. 

Now you should be ready to bookmark interesting sites.  When you submit a website url(your websites, as well as those of others) to any social site, there are a couple of ways that the website can receive more traffic: If the link is a 'dofollow', the search engines will follow the link back to the website, and that website should move up in the Search Engine Rankings for the keywords that are recognized.  The more dofollow backlinks a website has, the higher it will rank in some of the search engines like Google.  Likewise, more friends in any given social site, may also produce more traffic because more people will have the opportunity to see that you have submitted a new site.  Let your friends know about the new sites you have submitted, and they may give them an up vote, which will also give that site even more of a boost.  

When you are submitting, make sure that you use proper keywords.  You will usually have the opportunity to add keywords, or tags during the submission process.  You will want to take advantage of this because when proper keywords are used, the website you submitted may receive more backlinks within the social site for each different keyword, and it may also have a better chance at being pulled up in the search engines for the keywords that you use.  In short, tagging effectively and properly will increase the liklihood that your sites get noticed, and receive more traffic.  

If possible, always vote and be an active member in the various social sites.  Many social sites allow voting.  When you submit a url of a website, others may vote your submission up or down.  Obviously, you want more up votes, which will give the submission a bit more of a boost in the rankings.  However, some down votes are not that bad either, as they can build conversation and recognition if any comments have been left.  

Social sites (with the exception of those like Facebook) are loaded with information which has been rated by human beings, as opposed to the pages in Google and other search engines which are ranked by algorithms. If you are searching for information, it may be easier to find by using some of the larger social sites on the web.  Some suggest that these sites will even take over for search engines someday.  This is obviously a huge benefit to your business, if you have links within these social sites pointing back to your websites.  

Social Media Marketing is the new way to market your business online, and it is not going away anytime soon.  The benefits of Social Media Marketing are huge, whether you are building a business, looking for quality information, or just trying to get connected with other people.
