Friends are a very important aspect of social media marketing.  The more you have, the better your results can be.  You may have tried going it alone in order to build more backlinks and generate more organic traffic, however, there are several reasons why you should have friends with benefits.  

In social media marketing, friends make things work better.  If you haven't been doing the friends thing, then you have probably been missing out on a key part of this marketing technique.  There are in fact several parts, but having friends is the one we are going to talk about.  

When you join a social site you will want to upload your photo and add a bit of information about yourself.  After that, you can begin interacting within the site(if applicable) by doing various things; bookmarking, voting, commenting and adding friends.  

Why add friends?

Like I said before, friends make things work in these sites.  When you add friends and interact with them, they will most likely return the favor.  When you vote and comment on their submissions, they may do the same for you, which will be helpful when you submit something that you would like to be noticed.  Some social sites even have an option for you to let your friends know about what you have recently submitted.  Be careful with this though, you don't want to annoy everyone and you don't want to be accused of spamming the site.  

The more friends you have, the more likely it will be for your submissions to become noticed.  You will also obtain more votes, as well as more comments, as long as your submissions are interesting to others using the site.  More friends + more votes + more comments = more publicity, which will bring more traffic.  

As you remain active, you may also note that the PageRank of your profile page will be going up.  This is just like link building, but it's done with your social site profile page.  Adding friends gets your link on their pages, which will boost the PR of your profile, especially if those friends already have a high PR.  Commenting will also add to this because the link to your profile will be added along with any comments you make.  

Who cares about PageRank?

Google does.  If you can get some of your profiles at a PageRank of 5 or higher, you will be receiving PR5, or higher, backlinks to all of the sites you submit.  As you probably know, the higher the PR of a backlink, the more important that link is to Google.  If you have a profile page that is PR7, all of your submissions will be getting a PR7 backlink, and that is way better than 7 PR1 backlinks.  

Friends make these things possible.  I know it's not possible to be real active in every social site, but you can be in one or two of your favorites, which will benefit your business with more publicity and more traffic.
