Propeller Says:

"Propeller is a social news portal, meaning that it is programmed by you – the audience. Our members post links to stories from all over the Web. Many of these stories originate from the websites of traditional media, including newspapers and magazines. But you will also find many stories that seldom pop up in the mainstream. Perhaps it does take a village – or at least a large community of news-hungry citizens – to nudge certain stories into the limelight.

The appearance of a story on Propeller is only the beginning. Once the link has been posted, you can vote on it, comment on it, share it with friends, or bookmark it to read later. In this context, news is not simply a pile of facts to be absorbed. It is a conversation. It is a process. And above all, it is fun: not a word we always associate with the news."

Dave Earley Says:

Originally Propeller was the social media site for Netscape.  Propeller is actually operated by AOL, and became a site of its own about a year and a half ago.  It is a very popular site and is very similar to Digg.

In Propeller stories either get propped or dropped, which is equivalent to a thumbs up or a thumbs down.  You can create your own groups and interact as much as in any other social site.  The overall look of the site is great and it's a fun place to interact, however, the usability could be improved.

It's not quite as easy to navigate around Propeller as other social sites.  There's a lot going on no matter where you are located within the site.  It's a bit overcrowded for my liking and thus I am more interactive in other sites like Mixx, where navigation is quick, easy and there are more benefits.

When submitting a story from the main page of Propeller, only one category can be chosen and no groups can be chosen.  Using Mixx, up to 8 categories can be chosen, and an unlimited amount of groups and communities can be sumbitted to from the submission page as long as you are in them.

If I wasn't so active in Mixx, Propeller may be a site that I would be more active in, yet it is impossible to remain totally active in all of the social sites that are out there.  The user experience is good in Propeller, better than many other sites, but still not the best.
