Social media marketing is the new style of marketing.  It involves meeting new people, interacting, voting, commenting and finding stories, photos and videos to submit.  There are many social sites throughout the net right now, but only a select few really stand out.  However, the point isn't really whether or not the social sites stand out, but if you stand out within them.  

Social sites are here for a reason; they allow humans to interact with one another, while sharing things that are found throughout the net.  

This interaction that is constantly taking place has been known as Web 2.0, and it will be around for a long time to come.  Social sites continue to pop up here and there, and people continue to take advantage of them.  

Why are these sites taking over the net?  

It's quite simple really.  People search for information online everyday, right?  When you Google something, you get a list of at least 10 websites that are supposed to be related to your search.  Sometimes the search is accurate, and sometimes it's not so accurate.  The thing is, the information that search engines find for you is all configured by algorithms, and can be manipulated.  Which means that you may not find exactly what you were looking for when you did a search using a search engine like Google.  

On the other hand, there are several social sites that are well known, and used by people everyday (Mixx, Propeller, Digg, Slashdot).  If you were to do a search in one of those sites, you might find what you are looking for more easily since the rating is all done by people like you and me.  

The most interactive social sites, like the ones listed above, allow people to submit their stories, photos and videos.  Once they are submitted, others have the ability to vote and comment on them.  Obviously the sites that receive the most good votes, as well as comments, will rank ahead of other similar sites that might not have ranked so well.  This will allow website owners and those looking for information, to get connected more easily.  

Many of these social sites are here to get people connected to other people, more precise information, and relevant websites.  On the other hand, other social sites are here for backlinks.  Once a url is submitted to any social site, a link will go back to that particular website, which may be a "nofollow" or "dofollow" backlink, depending on what the social site allows.  

Getting more backlinks to a website is always a good thing, as more people will be able to find that site.  If the backlinks are "dofollow", search engines will give that site a higher ranking based on certain keywords for which it is recognized.  This puts small business owners, or the little guys at an even advantage with larger businesses and sites that rank very well on a regular basis.  By using social bookmarking, sites that usually have a hard time competing, are able to be competitive and receive more organic traffic from the search engines more quickly than ever.  

Whether you love social sites or not, they will be around for some time.  Through them people can get connected, find the information they are looking for, increase the traffic to their websites and compete in the online business world.  Perhaps one day social sites will make search engines obsolete?  I wonder if Google should start buying them out?
