Social Media Marketing is basically marketing your business or website through the use of the many social sites which can be found throughout the web.  There are 4 major reasons that people go to social sites; url submission, information search, connecting with friends, and voting and commenting on websites.  The search engines love the social sites because that's where the people go, and you should as well. 

If you use Social Media Marketing to increase your business, then you probably realize that you are gaining backlinks with each submission, which can bring you traffic in a couple of different ways.  Visitors can find your site directly from the social sites where your links are located, or search engine users can also find your site if the search engines recognize your site based on the keyword search.   Building links that point back to your site is a wise strategy in order to gain organic, as well as direct traffic.  

Does it matter what social sites I use?

It should!  While building backlinks is good for your business in any case, you also want to be receiving backlinks from authority sites.  It is much better to gain backlinks from sites with a high PageRank, as oppossed to tons of sites with lower PageRank.  When the PR of your site is high, Google is letting others know that your site is an authority site.  When links go out of your site with a high PR, Google will follow them to the various sites and those sites will also benefit from the high PR of your site.  

Generally, most social sites will have high PR because they are in fact authority sites, and that is where the people are drawn.  However, you always want to keep track of which sites have the highest PR, and which sites will always give you a dofollow backlink, and in turn you will find your website benefiting from increased traffic.  I have compiled a short list of social bookmarking sites along with their PR:

Mixx -PR8

Reddit - PR8 (nofollow)

Technorati - PR8 (nofollow)

Del.icio.us - PR8 (nofollow)

Twitter - PR8 (nofollow)

Digg - PR8

Propeller - PR8

Connotea - PR7 (nofollow)

Folkd - PR7 (nofollow)

Mister Wong - PR7

Yahoo - PR6

Right now these are the highest ranking social bookmarking sites, and the ones that you will want to use.  Feel free to use as many social sites as you like, as there are thousands, and every backlink will benefit your business.  However, the backlinks that give the most benefit will be the ones coming from sites such as the ones listed above.  

Also remember, you don't have to stick to social bookmarking sites when building your backlinks.  There are other high ranking websites out there and it is possible for you to get backlinks from those sites in one way or another.  Just do your homework and build strong backlinks.  Over time your site will become an authority site also, if you have properly used your Social Media Marketing strategy.
