If you're up in the air about how to promote your product, consider aerial banner advertising. Usually a long banner trails behind a small plane flying over a crowd of people. The sound of the plane signals the people to look up and read the message as it goes by. Even the excitement of a home run at a ball park cannot compete with the attention grabbing of this banner.

People have promoted products and places through TV and the printed page for decades. Some have asked themselves, "Why not try something different for a change?" A banner flapping in the wind behind a plane will be read. But will the message be remembered? The key is in the design of that message.

The first step is to know where you are headed. What would you like to have happen as a result of this advertising? Jot down your ideas and any creative ways to convey that goal through a simple message. Then discuss your idea with a design team. Compare your ideas with theirs and come up with a concept you feel will work for you.

Step two is to convey your concept through a message. Some banners contain the entire message, perhaps even a whole sentence. Others only share a location where more information is available such as a website or an address. Sometimes just a logo, if well known, will subliminally draw people to a store or restaurant.

Once the banner is designed, talk with the experts about how and when the message can be disseminated. Aerial ads are flown over beaches, fair grounds, concerts, ballparks, even rush hour traffic. Why not read something floating by while waiting for the cars to get moving again! The best time and place will be determined by the nature of the product or message.

Next, decide if you want this ad to be designed by an expert, or if you want to design it yourself and send it to them to print in the needed large format. Most companies can have your banner ready to fly within two weeks, although the busy summer months could take longer.

Normally an audience sees the ad for a mere 17 seconds before it is no longer visible. Though that seems brief, remember that it is 17 seconds of undivided attention. Neither is any competition in view during that time. It is like a full page ad in the paper. Then remember that the plane makes multiple passes over an area so the message is repeated over and over, impressing itself in the minds of those watching.

Once you have selected your message, your style of banner, and you've begun to understand the process, sign a contract and watch what happens. The majority of people who see banner advertising remember it, so if you have something they want, they'll be in touch.

So where can one find an aerial advertising firm? The best place to look is on the Internet. Shop around and see who will give the most air time for the money. Some companies design and print the banner as well as fly it for you. Why not give it a try? It may be better than you imagine.
