People work hard for their money. Once the toil and trouble of the day is done they want to kick back with a cold one - beer, lemonade, soda, water, whatever - and relax.

For most of us that often means flipping on the television and watching Sports Center, the Simpsons, Family Guy, Two and a Half Men, or any of a hundred different television shows as we comfortable lounge around. This form of leisure and entertainment is all some people want; give it to them and they could not be happier.

Others require a little more creativity.

Depending on your view, that could be where reality television comes in; as much as producers try to control the reality they present as television, you never can tell exactly how people will react and what they will do in any given situation. It is human nature to want to watch and see what famous people are up to; it is human nature just to be interested in seeing average Joe fly off a big rubber ball into a pool of water or eat rats on some deserted island.

Reality television is a huge success because it is cheap to produce and it satisfies the hidden voyeur in us all. Big business and Big Brother could not be happier at the choices the viewing public is making for their leisure and entertainment.

The networks know what formula works for the American public and this is evidenced by the same nonsensical formulaic mess they call primetime television: they just make a bunch of shows in which everybody sleeps with everybody and the kids are rude, loud-mouthed, selfish little brats. Crime and reality shows are also in the mix.

With the people satisfied, and distracted, the power elite can do what they wish in the real world as we are all wrapped up in the fake one we see on television. Ask yourself what is more important: Jon and Kate getting a divorce or rampant unemployment, poverty, and the increase of socialism in our beloved country?

And don't fast forward through this all-important issue. Actually, concerned citizens should make more use of entertainment in order to educate others regarding the threats against our freedom.

If we still have the freedom of speech (barely) then we should make use of it unless we want to see a state-controlled media. China controls the citizens' access to information. One day there will be new generations born into China that will never know what true freedom is about.

Do we want the same thing happening in America?

Andy Truthman is committed to educating others regarding the threat to America's freedom. Visit http://www.truth-it.net to learn more about such threats and how to restore our freedom.
